Hommage à Cipriano de Rore
At the 450th anniversary of his death
In 2015 is the 450th anniversary of Cipriano de Rore's death. One of the major Renaissance composers, He was a Flemish-born musician who spent the major part of his life in Italy. At first he was a maestro at the court of Ferrara under Ercole II d'Este, then he took the same position at the Basilica of San Marco in Venice, and in the end he served under Ottavio Farnese of Parma. Tombstone in the Parma cathedral refers de Rore as "Artis Musicae Viro omnium peritissimo". His music was a tremendously successful and enjoyed not only among contemporaries, but also among musicians of later generations, Our programme features de Rore's sacred music and his madrigals.

During our residency offered to us from the Seviqc Brezice Festival and EEEMERGING, we elaborate a programme honouring Cipriano de Rore (1515/1516-1565), a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance, who went to live and work in Italy and became one of the most prominent composers of madrigals in the middle of the 16th century. He was Maestro di Cappella at the court of Ercole II d’Este, Duke of Ferrara and later followed Willaert as Maestro di Cappella at the Basilica San Marco in Venice.
The Swiss vocal ensemble Voces Suaves, that is based in Basel, performs as a group of soloists focusing on music of the Renaissance and Baroque era. Grounded in the knowledge of historical context and the languages of the works performed, we strive for a warm and full overall sound, so that the music, inspired by sincere emotion, goes straight to the heart.
The core ensemble consists of nine professional singers under the direction of Francesco Saverio Pedrini, most of them alumni of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Mutual friendship and intense cooperation have drawn the members of the ensemble together and led to an intimate musical exchange throughout the creative process.
With our programm Il Divino - Hommage à Cipriano de Rore we would like to honour and present the precious work of this master who died 450 years ago.
About the project
The Flemish composer and author of some of the most precious and significant compositions of the Italian Renaissance style music, Cipriano de Rore, passed away in Parma in September 1565. Born in Ronse, Flanders, his musical activities were mostly centered in Italy, where he was Maestro di Cappella at the court of Ercole II d’Este, Duke of Ferrara, between 1547 and 1559, followed by a brief period as Maestro di Cappella at the Basilica San Marco in Venice, and during the last years of his life in the services of Ottavio Farnese, Duke of Parma.
His madrigals enjoyed an enormous proliferation during his lifetime and after his death. In fact, throughout Europe many of the best composers among the subsequent generations were greatly inspired by de Rore’s madrigals, as they marvelously lent themselves for elaborations in the form of diminutions for voice or for instruments. Giulio Cesare Monteverdi’s famous declaration, published in his brother Claudio’s “Scherzi Musicali” in 1607, refers to Cipriano as the “divine” initiator of the “Seconda Pratica”, and can be considered a major testimony of the great esteem paid to Cipriano de Rore many decades after his death.
The first part of the program, dedicated to the repertoire of sacred music, features compositions of de Rore together with those of his contemporaries, particularly so with Adrian Willaert, his predecessor as Maestro di Cappella at San Marco in Venice. The second part emphasizes de Rore’s madrigalistic opus, starting with the extraordinary spiritual madrigal “Vergine bella”, honouring the Virgin Mary in an Italian text based on the homonymous verses of Francesco Petrarca.
For some of the madrigals, such as “Ancor che col partire” and “Alla dolc’ombra”, the original version is juxtaposed with the diminutions for voices or keyboard by Rognoni and E. Pasquini.
