Kamnik, Church of the Immaculate Conception

The original Gothic Church of the Immaculate Conception on Šutna, the most beautiful street in Kamnik, stood on this site in as early as 1207. It had to be restored several times as a result of fire and earthquake. The baroque parish church was built in 1734 at the initiative of Maximilian Leopold Rasp. It was designed by the architect Gregor Maček. The church tower is separate from the main building and still shows Gothic forms. Today’s baroque church is adorned by stone statues on the roof. The separate bell tower is a remnant of the medieval church. The uniformly vaulted interior is decorated with illusionist fresoces of the Coronation of Mary, the work of Franc Jelovšek. The oil paintings are by Valentin J. Metzinger. The Church of the Immaculate Conception contains one of the oldest organs in Slovenia, built in 1680.
